TCS and Sanctuary Asia launch 'India Naturally' — a book on wildlife sanctuaries in India
S Ramadorai pays tribute to country's abundance of wilderness; reiterates need for conservation efforts for future generations
Reiterating TCS' commitment to the environment and wild life conservation, S Ramadorai, CEO and managing director, TCS, launched India Naturally — a compendium of the sanctuaries in India authored by noted conservationists Bittu Saigal and Dr Anish Andheria. The book, which was conceptualised by TCS, a leading global IT services and business solutions firm, with Sanctuary Asia, is a visual delight that captures the richness and diversity of India's forests and the country's wildlife.
Exhaustively researched with compelling photography, the book profiles various aspects of the sanctuaries in the country and acts as a reference for wildlife enthusiasts. India Naturally also signifies an important milestone in the ongoing association between TCS and Sanctuary Asia. The association has resulted in an increased awareness among a large number of TCS employees on their responsibilities towards the environment and the role they can play in wild life conservation.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Ramadorai, CEO and MD, TCS, said, "Protecting and caring for the environment is a common thread that connects over 100,000 TCS-ers across the globe. If we want future generations to remember us, then together with advances in science and technology, we must guarantee them clean air, clean water, fertile soil and a well-preserved environment. TCS’ efforts with Sanctuary Asia are a small step in this direction."
"In this age of fast paced growth and our technology-centric lives, a visit to a true wilderness acts like a soothing balm in our busy lives. India Naturally is a beautiful encapsulation of the tremendous avenues available to us in India to reboot our psyche and appreciate nature — which is truly the ultimate doctor, the ultimate psychologist, the ultimate entertainer and the ultimate provider," added Ramadorai.
The book is another initiative of TCS Maitree to build environmental awareness among young TCS-ers. TCS Maitree was founded in early 2002 to bring together associates and their families. Since its inception, TCS Maitree has been engaging with TCS-ers globally to increase their appreciation for the environment, encourage conservation and support initiatives in the community. These include trips to national parks to create awareness of the importance of the varied flora and fauna in our communities, Earth day celebrations, tree plantation programmes as well as building check dams at Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Mumbai at various locations for water storage.
TCS Maitree has also been also conducting regular treks, nature walks to promote wildlife conservation. Campaigns have been launched to promote greener work areas, water conservation, better living and cleaner surrounding, awareness about global warming.
TCS has also taken a global initiative to reduce the amount of power, water and paper being consumed in its offices around the globe. In TCS facilities, there are also programmes for the management of waste through vermiculture projects, rainwater harvesting as well as initiatives to phase out ozone-depleting chemicals and responsible e-waste disposal.
As a part of the promotion of the book, TCS and Sanctuary Asia has planned a photo exhibition also titled 'India Naturally'. A panel discussion on 'A Climate for Survival' with eminent personalities like Hemendra Kothari, chairman, DSP Merrill Lynch, Pavan Sukhdev, head, global markets, Deutsche Bank, among others is also being planned on February 8, 2007.
India Naturally has been published by Sanctuary Asia and is available in all leading bookstores in the country.

Google Earth's Day and Night

Trying to add further realism to the conditions of the Earth, I like to see where the night and day side of the Earth is at the moment. Someone recently posted a new attempt at showing the Earth's night and day [GE File. You must have Google Earth installed.] conditions, and it updates automatically every 10 minutes.
I prefer to just leave this in My Places and turn it on when I want to see where the sun is setting or rising at the moment. Turn it off to continue browsing without this extra image interfering with your view.
About Prithvi Theatre
The Prithvi Theatre is a subsidiary of the Shri Prithviraj Kapoor Memorial Trust & Research Foundation. The Trust was set up in 1975 in the memory of Prithviraj Kapoor, to achieve the following aims:
*
to build a theatre to promote professional Hindi theatre primarily, with all technical facilities available
*
subsidising and promoting aspiring and deserving stage artists, technicians, researchers etc.
*
managing a theatre of international standards - hosting and conducting workshops
*
providing rehearsal and workshop spaces
*
creating a theatre resource center and research library (under construction)
*
providing medical and educational assistance to theatre workers and their children
The Prithvi Theatre is a completely non-profit entity depending on the patronage of individuals and companies committed to the development of the performing and fine arts. Since its inception it is these sponsors who have enabled the theatre to grow and expand its activities.
Our Philosophy
We seek to be a catalyst for theatre – we were set up to promote and inspire the greatest possible professionalism in theatre, and we continue to work with that objective in mind.
Underlying everything we do – bringing it all together – is the Prithvi approach, or the Prithvi Way:
*
An open welcoming attitude – the theatre itself is built this way, with no main gate, just an opening which literally draws people of the path and into the theatre compound. Groups access Prithvi equipment and property easily, and are invited to make the theatre their home for the days they perform here.
*
A realistic sense of doing theatre in the country, which means we are mindful of unnecessary expenditure, but will not compromise on the needs of a production.
*
A deep respect for the performance as the sacred space – no latecomers, an ongoing effort to quell cell phones, a staff and all volunteers trained to do their utmost to provide for the needs of the performance – to constantly think of what is possible rather than what is not allowed!
*
We also do our utmost, in theatre events created by us, to ensure that every seat has an audience member sitting in it. Complimentary tickets are never handed out, but are picked up at the venue and released 15 minutes before showtime, so that others eager audiences get a chance to see the show though last minute sales.
*
A belief in other peoples ideas, and in our role as a catalyst to help those ideas towards fruition. Thus PTNotes – our monthly newsletter, a brainchild of the editor Ramu Ramanathan, Dhamaal which keep resurrecting itself under many umbrellas - a brainchild of Satyadev Dubey – Prithvi gave space and Dubey ran it originally. Keli Festivals – initially held in collaboration with Prithvi, and now gets our full logistical support. Marathi theatre on last weekend of every month – space given to Awishkar. Segments of our Festivals. You have a practical idea to contribute to the growth of and interest in theatre, Prithvi will mobilize its resources to help you on your way.
*
Constantly evolving, questioning ourselves, re-evaluating our work.

A Narmada Diary

The Sardar Sarover Dam in western India, lynch-pin of a mammoth development project on the river Narmada's banks, has been criticized as uneconomical and unjust. It will benefit urban India at a cost borne by the rural poor.
When completed, the dam will drown 37,000 hectares of fertile land, displace over 200,000 adivasis - the area's indigenous people -, and cost up to 400 billion rupees. Ecological, cultural, and human costs - as often is the case with "mega" projects - have never been estimated.
A NARMADA DIARY introduces the Narmada Bachao Andolan (the Save Narmada Movement) which has spearheaded the agitation against the dam. As government resettlement programs prove inadequate, the Narmada Bachao Andolan has emerged as one of the most dynamic struggles in India today. With non-violent protests and a determination to drown rather than to leave their homes and land, the people of the Narmada valley have become symbols of a global struggle against unjust development.
But the dam building continues. If it's height is not checked, the entire adivasi region of the Narmada will drown. In the name of progress, a relatively self-sufficient, egalitarian and environmentally sound economy and culture will be destroyed and a proud people reduced to the status of refugees and slumdwellers.

Reviews
“Scrupulous attention is paid to the particularities of action and speech – and to the sensitive membrane joining / separating them …At a time when both languages and agencies of emancipatory politics are so contested, so fractured, the modesty of the observant witness may be this documentary’s subtlest gesture.”

Tamilnadu Bandh on 23rd April - DMK calls Tamilnadu strike

As Sri Lankan troops swung into a “final assault” against LTTE, Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi on Tuesday mounted pressure on the UPA government by calling a general strike in the state on Thursday and asked the Centre to give an ultimatum to Colombo to declare an “immediate and permanent ceasefire” in that country.
Issuing a “final appeal” late on Tuesday night, he asked all Tamils irrespective of their political affiliations to join the 12-hour strike.
Karunanidhi, a key ally of Congress, said the strike was not only to demand that the Centre take measures for a permanent ceasefire to “save” Tamils from “massacre” by Sri Lankan army and “condemn” the Lankan government but also to sympathise with the plight of Tamils in that country.
Karunanidhi’s strike call hours after he sent telegrams to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and external affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee pressing India issues an ultimatum to Sri Lankan government for an immediate and permanent ceasefire to “save” lakhs of Tamils.
“I insist that the Prime Minister, UPA chairperson and external affairs minister give an ultimatum to Sri Lankan government for an immediate and permanent ceasefire and save lakhs of Tamils”, he said in the telegrams.
He followed it up with another statement–the first this evening–saying the need of the hour was an immediate ceasefire instead of debating whether LTTE chief V Prabhakaran was a terrorist or not.
The DMK chief, whose remarks that he did not see Prabhakaran as a terrorist had stirred the hornet’s nest, described the war situation in Sri Lanka as “alarming” and the predicament of the Tamils “very critical”.
“What we want now is to stop the killings of Tamils there. There should be a permanent ceasefire”, he said in the statement.
“When some youth in Ireland undertook a fast in England demanding that they be treated as political prisoners, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had told the then British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher to consider the issue from a humanitarian angle. I expect the same from her daughter-in-law Sonia Gandhi on Sri Lankan Tamils issue,” Karunanidhi said.
“Our concern is not a debate on whether Eelam, a separate homeland for Tamils in the island republic, could provide a solution, whether the ban on LTTE is to be lifted or whether Prabhakaran is a terrorist or not. Only a permanent ceasefire can save Tamils,” he said.
Despite various nations demanding the ceasefire, Sri Lanka refused to accept the demand. “What is the way out?” he said, adding the Centre had a responsibility to save Tamils.
“We cannot do any thing except crying for the Tamils. It is for the Centre to act now,” Karunanidhi, who has come under fire from opposition parties for not doing enough on the Lankan Tamils issue, said.
Coming down on AIADMK-led opposition that DMK had not done anything for a ceasefire, he said “I had done a lot on Sri Lankan Tamils issue. I am pained by the remarks that I am enacting a drama on the issue.”
Karunanidhi said his opponents were saying that he did not pressure the Centre on the issue. “Have I not met the Prime Minister or the Congress president? Have I not discussed the issue with the external affairs minister and the home minister? For political reasons, they are saying that I am enacting a drama,” he said.
In the evening’s second statement, he issued the strike call saying the action “is not only a condemnation of the Sri Lankan government but also to shed tears for the dying members of the Tamil community,” he said.
The DMK chief said all Tamils irrespective of their political affiliations should participate in the strike in a peaceful manner. “This is my final appeal to Tamils”, he added.
2)
In a bid to woo the Tamil voters ahead of Lok Sabha elections in the state, DMK chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has called for a bandh in his own state. The Tamil Nadu bandh will be observed tomorrow to protest against the violence in Sri Lanka. Karunanidhi also issued a notice to Centre to give an ultimatum to Sri Lanka to declare an “immediate and permanent ceasefire”.
Just a couple of days ago, Karrunanidhi had backtracked from his support to LTTE and termed the outfit as a terrorist organization. He had said that it would not be possible to forget Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination, which was carried out by the LTTE in 1991.
The Sri Lankan government is all set to launch a final assault against the LTTE after the deadline given to Prabhakaran and his associated to surrender. Over 35,000 people are said to be trapped in the war zone, while over 60,000 reportedly escaped to safer places. Even the United States has expressed its helplessness over the situation.
Karunanidhi, who expressed concerns over the plight of Tamil civilians in Sri Lanka, has already sent telegrams to Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, putting pressure on them to act on this issue.
