TCS and Sanctuary Asia launch 'India Naturally' — a book on wildlife sanctuaries in India

S Ramadorai pays tribute to country's abundance of wilderness; reiterates need for conservation efforts for future generations

Reiterating TCS' commitment to the environment and wild life conservation, S Ramadorai, CEO and managing director, TCS, launched India Naturally — a compendium of the sanctuaries in India authored by noted conservationists Bittu Saigal and Dr Anish Andheria. The book, which was conceptualised by TCS, a leading global IT services and business solutions firm, with Sanctuary Asia, is a visual delight that captures the richness and diversity of India's forests and the country's wildlife.

Exhaustively researched with compelling photography, the book profiles various aspects of the sanctuaries in the country and acts as a reference for wildlife enthusiasts. India Naturally also signifies an important milestone in the ongoing association between TCS and Sanctuary Asia. The association has resulted in an increased awareness among a large number of TCS employees on their responsibilities towards the environment and the role they can play in wild life conservation.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Ramadorai, CEO and MD, TCS, said, "Protecting and caring for the environment is a common thread that connects over 100,000 TCS-ers across the globe. If we want future generations to remember us, then together with advances in science and technology, we must guarantee them clean air, clean water, fertile soil and a well-preserved environment. TCS’ efforts with Sanctuary Asia are a small step in this direction."

"In this age of fast paced growth and our technology-centric lives, a visit to a true wilderness acts like a soothing balm in our busy lives. India Naturally is a beautiful encapsulation of the tremendous avenues available to us in India to reboot our psyche and appreciate nature — which is truly the ultimate doctor, the ultimate psychologist, the ultimate entertainer and the ultimate provider," added Ramadorai.

The book is another initiative of TCS Maitree to build environmental awareness among young TCS-ers. TCS Maitree was founded in early 2002 to bring together associates and their families. Since its inception, TCS Maitree has been engaging with TCS-ers globally to increase their appreciation for the environment, encourage conservation and support initiatives in the community. These include trips to national parks to create awareness of the importance of the varied flora and fauna in our communities, Earth day celebrations, tree plantation programmes as well as building check dams at Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Mumbai at various locations for water storage.

TCS Maitree has also been also conducting regular treks, nature walks to promote wildlife conservation. Campaigns have been launched to promote greener work areas, water conservation, better living and cleaner surrounding, awareness about global warming.

TCS has also taken a global initiative to reduce the amount of power, water and paper being consumed in its offices around the globe. In TCS facilities, there are also programmes for the management of waste through vermiculture projects, rainwater harvesting as well as initiatives to phase out ozone-depleting chemicals and responsible e-waste disposal.

As a part of the promotion of the book, TCS and Sanctuary Asia has planned a photo exhibition also titled 'India Naturally'. A panel discussion on 'A Climate for Survival' with eminent personalities like Hemendra Kothari, chairman, DSP Merrill Lynch, Pavan Sukhdev, head, global markets, Deutsche Bank, among others is also being planned on February 8, 2007.

India Naturally has been published by Sanctuary Asia and is available in all leading bookstores in the country.

Google Earth's Day and Night

Trying to add further realism to the conditions of the Earth, I like to see where the night and day side of the Earth is at the moment. Someone recently posted a new attempt at showing the Earth's night and day [GE File. You must have Google Earth installed.] conditions, and it updates automatically every 10 minutes.

I prefer to just leave this in My Places and turn it on when I want to see where the sun is setting or rising at the moment. Turn it off to continue browsing without this extra image interfering with your view.

About Prithvi Theatre

The Prithvi Theatre is a subsidiary of the Shri Prithviraj Kapoor Memorial Trust & Research Foundation. The Trust was set up in 1975 in the memory of Prithviraj Kapoor, to achieve the following aims:

*
to build a theatre to promote professional Hindi theatre primarily, with all technical facilities available
*
subsidising and promoting aspiring and deserving stage artists, technicians, researchers etc.
*
managing a theatre of international standards - hosting and conducting workshops
*
providing rehearsal and workshop spaces
*
creating a theatre resource center and research library (under construction)
*
providing medical and educational assistance to theatre workers and their children

The Prithvi Theatre is a completely non-profit entity depending on the patronage of individuals and companies committed to the development of the performing and fine arts. Since its inception it is these sponsors who have enabled the theatre to grow and expand its activities.

Our Philosophy

We seek to be a catalyst for theatre – we were set up to promote and inspire the greatest possible professionalism in theatre, and we continue to work with that objective in mind.

Underlying everything we do – bringing it all together – is the Prithvi approach, or the Prithvi Way:

*
An open welcoming attitude – the theatre itself is built this way, with no main gate, just an opening which literally draws people of the path and into the theatre compound. Groups access Prithvi equipment and property easily, and are invited to make the theatre their home for the days they perform here.
*
A realistic sense of doing theatre in the country, which means we are mindful of unnecessary expenditure, but will not compromise on the needs of a production.
*
A deep respect for the performance as the sacred space – no latecomers, an ongoing effort to quell cell phones, a staff and all volunteers trained to do their utmost to provide for the needs of the performance – to constantly think of what is possible rather than what is not allowed!
*
We also do our utmost, in theatre events created by us, to ensure that every seat has an audience member sitting in it. Complimentary tickets are never handed out, but are picked up at the venue and released 15 minutes before showtime, so that others eager audiences get a chance to see the show though last minute sales.
*
A belief in other peoples ideas, and in our role as a catalyst to help those ideas towards fruition. Thus PTNotes – our monthly newsletter, a brainchild of the editor Ramu Ramanathan, Dhamaal which keep resurrecting itself under many umbrellas - a brainchild of Satyadev Dubey – Prithvi gave space and Dubey ran it originally. Keli Festivals – initially held in collaboration with Prithvi, and now gets our full logistical support. Marathi theatre on last weekend of every month – space given to Awishkar. Segments of our Festivals. You have a practical idea to contribute to the growth of and interest in theatre, Prithvi will mobilize its resources to help you on your way.
*
Constantly evolving, questioning ourselves, re-evaluating our work.
